If you’ve ever got your home painted in Bengaluru, you already know the drill. Three guys turn up on a Monday morning, promise you’ll be done by Friday, and by the time they leave you’ve got paint splatters on your granite counters, a smell in the house that lingers for a week, and a finish that starts showing patchy spots the moment the first monsoon rain hits the exterior walls.

We’ve walked into more homes than we can count where the previous paint job looked fine on the day of handover and fell apart within eighteen months. It’s rarely the paint brand’s fault. It’s almost always what happened before the paint went on the wall.

The Prep Work Nobody Talks About

Painters love talking about brands. Asian Paints versus Berger versus Nerolac, this shade versus that shade. What they don’t spend enough time on is the surface underneath.

Bengaluru homes, especially anything built in the last fifteen years, tend to have hairline cracks in the plaster from natural settling. If you paint straight over these without proper crack filling, the crack reopens within a few months and you can literally watch the paint line split along the same spot. We’ve seen it happen on brand new apartments in Whitefield within a year of possession.

Before any brush touches a wall, the surface needs:

  • A proper wash down to remove dust, cobwebs, and any old flaking paint
  • Crack filling with the right putty, not just a quick smear that looks fine wet and shrinks when it dries
  • Sanding down to a smooth, even surface
  • At least one coat of primer, sometimes two if the wall has been repainted multiple times already and has uneven absorption

Skip any one of these steps and you’re basically painting on a shaky foundation. It’ll look good in the photos taken right after the job. It won’t look good a year later.

Interior vs Exterior Is Not the Same Job

A lot of painters treat the whole house the same way, same primer, same technique, same speed, whether it’s your bedroom wall or the exterior facade facing Bengaluru’s sun and rain. That’s a mistake.

Exterior walls in this city take a real beating. UV exposure fades colour faster than most people expect, and the monsoon months put real moisture stress on any wall facing the prevailing rain direction. If your exterior paint job doesn’t use a proper weatherproof exterior emulsion with the right elastomeric properties, you’ll see chalking, fading, and in worse cases, damp patches bleeding through within one or two rainy seasons.

Interior walls have a different set of problems: kitchen and bathroom walls dealing with grease and humidity, living room walls that need to handle scuffs from furniture and daily wear without losing sheen.

Different zones need different paint systems, not the same tin of paint used everywhere because it’s easier for the crew.

Why We Don’t Subcontract

Most painting “companies” in Bengaluru are actually just brokers. You call them, they take a margin, and they hand your job off to a local contractor’s team who you never actually spoke to and who has zero accountability to the brand you called. If something goes wrong, you’re stuck between two parties pointing fingers at each other.

At Zenhomez we run our painting jobs with our own in-house technicians, our ZENMAN team, not subcontracted labour. That means the person who quoted your job is accountable for the person who executes it. If a wall isn’t sanded properly or a second coat is skipped to save time, that’s on us, and we fix it, not a random contractor who’s already moved on to the next site by the time you notice.

A Few Things Worth Asking Before You Hire Anyone

  1. Are they using their own technicians or subcontracting to a local team?
  2. What’s included in crack filling and putty work, or is it charged separately once the job has already started?
  3. What paint system are they proposing for exterior versus interior, and why?
  4. How many coats are actually included in the quote, and is primer counted as one of them (it shouldn’t be)?
  5. What’s the warranty on the workmanship, separate from the paint manufacturer’s warranty?

Painting is one of those jobs where the difference between a good outcome and a mediocre one isn’t really about the brand of paint you pick. It’s about whether the surface was prepped properly and whether the person on the ladder actually cared about the job past getting paid for it.

If you’re planning a paint job in Bengaluru this season, happy to come by and take a look at the walls first before quoting anything. No harm in a second opinion before you commit.
